A memorial service was held in El Cajon to honor San Diego Police Officer Austin Machitar, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty at the age of 30. The service took place at 2100 Greenfield Drive at Shadow Mountain Community Church, starting at 10 a.m. and concluding at noon.
The event commenced with a prelude by pianist Michael Sanchez, followed by a welcome and opening prayer led by San Diego Police Department Chaplain Chuck Price. Special tributes were given by various dignitaries including San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, SDPD Chief of Police Scott Wahl, and others.
One touching tribute came from San Diego Sheriff’s Office Deputy Crystal Corona, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for Officer Machitar’s impact and presence. The service ended with a flag folding and presentation by the SDPD Honor Guard, as well as a 21-gun salute.
Tragically, Officer Machitar lost his life in a vehicle crash on Aug. 26 at the intersection of Doliva Drive and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. While responding to a speeding vehicle that failed to yield for a traffic stop, Officer Machitar’s patrol car was struck at high speed by the fleeing suspect, resulting in a fatal outcome for Officer Machitar and critical injuries for his partner, Officer Zachary Martinez.
Despite the tragic loss, Officer Martinez managed to survive the crash and was released from hospital care on Sept. 3. The driver of the pursuit vehicle did not survive the collision.
Officer Nick Marino fondly remembered Officer Machitar’s dedication and positive energy, highlighting the profound impact he had within the department and community. Officer Machitar had served with the San Diego Police Department for over five years and is survived by his parents and sister.
