The family of a 31-year-old American tourist, Mackenzie Michalski from Portland, Oregon, is mourning her tragic loss after she was killed while on vacation in Budapest, Hungary. A 37-year-old suspect is currently in custody in connection with her death.
Michalski was reported missing on Nov. 5 after she was last seen at a nightclub in central Budapest. Police reviewed security footage from local nightclubs and identified the suspect with whom Michalski was seen the night of her disappearance.
The suspect was detained on Nov. 7 and later confessed to the killing after being questioned by police.
Before the confession, Michalski’s family and friends had launched a search effort, including starting a Facebook group to gather tips on her whereabouts. Tragically, her parents learned of her death while traveling to Hungary to assist in the search.
At a candlelight vigil in Budapest, the victim’s father, Bill Michalski, expressed his deep emotions over the loss of his daughter. He described her death as senseless and expressed his struggle to come to terms with what had happened.
The suspect, an Irish citizen identified as L.T.M., met Michalski at a nightclub before the tragic incident occurred. He claimed that the killing was accidental but attempted to cover it up by disposing of her body in a remote area outside Budapest.
Police released video footage showing the suspect guiding authorities to the location where he had left Michalski’s body. They also revealed that he had conducted internet searches related to disposing of a body and police procedures before his arrest.
Crime scene photographs showed items belonging to Michalski, confirming her identity. She was described as a compassionate nurse practitioner who will be remembered fondly by those who knew her.
During the vigil, Michalski’s father shared memories of his daughter, who considered Budapest her “happy place” due to her love for the city’s history and relaxed atmosphere.
This heartbreaking incident has left the family and community in shock, as they try to come to terms with the senseless loss of a beloved young woman.
