INDEPENDENCE, Mo.—The father of a 3-year-old boy who fell out of the eighth-story window of a Missouri apartment building and tragically passed away has been charged with child endangerment, along with his girlfriend.
Online court records do not list an attorney for either of them.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at their residence in the Kansas City suburb of Independence after a resident on the fourth floor reported witnessing the child’s fall. The boy was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead.
According to online court records, the father and his girlfriend were aware of issues with securing the window in the room where the children lived for several months. The father mentioned that neighbors and building management had warned them about the children throwing toys out of the window.
The girlfriend admitted to police that she had concerns about a child falling out of the window but still left them unattended in the room for extended periods.
A probable cause statement revealed that the apartment was filled with trash, and the other children were taken into state protective custody. One of the children disclosed being whipped during an interview.
Resident Elliot West informed The Kansas City Star that residents kept their windows open due to the lack of central air conditioning working during the summer. The weather on Monday was hot and humid, with temperatures in the mid-90s.
