Six newborns tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire at a baby care hospital in New Delhi, India’s capital, as confirmed by local authorities on Sunday.
Dramatic television footage captured firefighters tirelessly working to extinguish the flames that erupted late Saturday night, completely engulfing the hospital located in the eastern part of the city.
According to the fire department, reported by news agency ANI (in which Reuters holds a minority stake), six other infants were successfully rescued and transferred to a different medical facility, with one of them currently on a ventilator. Fortunately, the fire has now been brought under control.
The owner of the baby hospital is said to have fled, as stated by Delhi police.
Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal vowed on social media platform X, “The causes of the incident are being investigated and whoever is responsible for this negligence will not be spared.”
This tragic event comes just a day after a fire at an entertainment center in the western state of Gujarat claimed the lives of 27 individuals. Reports from local media suggest that two individuals have been apprehended in connection with that particular incident.
