Firefighters are currently making progress in battling the Airport Fire in Orange and Riverside counties, where 23,519 acres have been burned, with containment now at 19 percent.
According to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi, the weather conditions have been favorable, with cooler temperatures, a marine layer, and higher relative humidity.
Fire officials reported that the relative humidity on Sunday was expected to be around 66 percent over most of the fire below 3,500 feet, with the possibility of light showers or drizzle on Sunday night into Monday morning.
Crews have been successful in increasing containment in areas like Lake Elsinore, Decker Canyon Road, and Lakeland Village. Additional hand crews are being brought in to take advantage of the favorable weather conditions.
Evacuation orders are in place for various neighborhoods in both Orange and Riverside counties, with evacuation warnings in effect for several areas.
An evacuation center has been set up at Foothill Ranch Library for those affected by the fire, and large animals are being housed at various locations.
Road closures are in place in Orange County to ensure the safety of residents and firefighters.
So far, 11 firefighters have suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze, and two civilians have also been injured.
Cal Fire estimates that the fire will be fully contained by September 24.
The Airport Fire is one of three large wildfires burning in Southern California, with the South Coast Air Quality Management District issuing an air quality advisory due to smoke from the fires.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has secured a grant from FEMA to provide essential resources for suppressing the Airport Fire.
