Florida telecommunications worker, Ping Li, a US citizen born in China, has been charged with spying on Chinese dissidents, including the persecuted Falun Gong community, on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). According to a federal indictment, Mr. Li allegedly worked as a cooperative agent for the Ministry of State Security, China’s top intelligence agency, for over 13 years.
At the behest of a Chinese intelligence officer in Wuhan, Mr. Li collected personal information on Chinese dissidents, pro-democracy activists, US politicians, nonprofits, and Falun Gong practitioners and supporters. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
This case is part of ongoing US efforts to counter Beijing’s attempts to suppress Falun Gong, a spiritual group advocating truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. Chinese intelligence officers often rely on overseas contacts to gather sensitive information and target political dissidents.
Mr. Li, who worked for a major US telecommunications company and an international information technology company, allegedly created multiple fake email accounts and used various tactics to avoid detection by US law enforcement. He provided information on Falun Gong practitioners and authors critical of the CCP to the Chinese officer.
The indictment reveals that Mr. Li shared details about US government surveillance capabilities, nonprofit operations, and cybersecurity training materials with the Chinese officer during his trips to China. He also assisted in locating a Chinese individual in the US and provided information on hacking events targeting US firms.
The Chinese regime’s suppression of Falun Gong extends beyond its borders, with practitioners being of particular interest to Chinese intelligence due to their perceived subversive ideas. The Epoch Times has contacted Mr. Li’s attorney for comment on the charges.
