TABERNACLE, N.J.—Authorities have reported that a rapidly spreading forest fire in southern New Jersey has burned thousands of acres and is currently 65 percent contained.
The fire, which started in the Wharton State Forest, was first reported early Friday. Officials believe it originated near the Batona Campground in Tabernacle, prompting the evacuation of the area as a safety measure.
As of Saturday, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service has estimated that the blaze has consumed approximately 4000 acres (1618.74 hectares) but has made significant progress in containment efforts. Crews are actively monitoring and enhancing containment lines, as well as conducting burnout operations in areas with unburnt fuel.
Earlier reports indicated that crews were utilizing a backfire operation to combat the fire, a tactic that involves burning areas ahead of the main fire to prevent further spread. Multiple roads and trails have been closed as a precaution.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and authorities continue to work towards full containment.
