French President Macron Dissolves National Assembly After Election Defeat
PARIS—French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Sunday that he would be dissolving the National Assembly and calling for a snap legislative election following a heavy defeat for his party in the European Parliament elections.
Speaking from the Elysee presidential palace, Macron stated, “I’ve decided to give you back the choice of our parliamentary future through the vote. I am therefore dissolving the National Assembly.” The election will be held in two rounds on June 30 and July 7.
The decision comes as early results from France showed the right-wing National Rally party leading in the European Union’s parliamentary election, surpassing Macron’s pro-European centrists, as reported by French opinion poll institutes.
