A reputed gang member incarcerated in Florida is expected to face charges in the tragic murder of a tennis-loving teenager more than ten years after the innocent honor roll student was shot and killed at a Bronx park, according to law enforcement sources.
Steve Boria, believed to be a member of the “Slut Gang” in the Bronx, is set to be extradited to New York to answer for the murder of 14-year-old Kemar Bryan Brooks, who was found dead from gunshot wounds in Haffen Park in July 2012.
The Bronx District Attorney’s Office has not provided any comments on the matter.
Boria, known as “Chrome,” was suspected of being involved in Brooks’ death, which occurred as the teen was playing tennis with friends and was struck by a stray bullet.
After years of little progress in the case, a breakthrough came in 2018 when a gun believed to be the murder weapon was recovered by the authorities.
Boria is currently serving a 15-year sentence in a federal prison in Florida after pleading guilty to gun and drug charges in 2019.
Federal prosecutors described Boria as the most violent member of the Slut Gang, which was known for criminal activities in the Bronx community.
Several shootings linked to the gang, including the one targeting rival gang members in September 2012, were attributed to Boria.
Brooks’ tragic death occurred as he sought shelter during a thunderstorm at a park close to his home.
His father discovered his son’s lifeless body later that night, recalling Kemar as a brilliant and trouble-free student.
Kemar, a freshman at the Bronx Academy of Health Careers, was known for his academic achievements and love for sports.
He was the youngest of five siblings and had recently immigrated to the US from Jamaica.
Boria’s attorney from the 2019 case did not respond to requests for comments.
