Jeff Yass, a Republican megadonor, recently contributed to a super PAC that is working to unseat a progressive incumbent in Pittsburgh.
The Moderate PAC, an external group that seeks to support centrist Democrats, has been backing a primary challenge against Rep. Summer Lee, a member of “The Squad.” Lee and her supporters have highlighted Yass’ $1 million donation to the PAC in 2022, when it supported Democratic Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Don Davis of North Carolina.
According to Moderate PAC’s president, Ty Strong, Yass has made further contributions to the group in recent weeks, which is being disclosed publicly for the first time.
While the exact amount of Yass’ latest donation remains undisclosed, Strong mentioned that it will be revealed in a campaign finance filing due later this month. He stated that he approached Yass in March following donations received from constituents in Lee’s district.
Strong emphasized that Pittsburgh-based donations will match Yass’ contribution, indicating a growing support base for the cause.
Yass, known for his donations to conservative causes like the Club for Growth, has been in the spotlight due to his investments in TikTok’s parent company amid calls for its sale. Strong clarified that Yass supports moderate Democrats over far-left Democrats.
Moderate PAC recently released an ad accusing Lee of opposing President Joe Biden, and plans to continue its advertising efforts depending on fundraising success. The group has invested significantly in TV and digital ads, with Lee’s allies also receiving support from outside organizations.
Despite the support for Lee, concerns remain about potential spending from the United Democracy Project, particularly in light of AIPAC’s pledge to spend $100 million this cycle to challenge progressives.
With less than three weeks until the April 23 primary in Pennsylvania, the race is intensifying, and the involvement of key players like the United Democracy Project could significantly impact the outcome.
