Treasury Department Employee Lied to Investigators During Jan. 6 Capitol Breach, Inspector General Reports
According to a report obtained by The Epoch Times, an employee of the U.S. Treasury Department violated the law during the events of January 6, 2021, but was not prosecuted. The report, conducted by the Treasury Department Office of Inspector General (OIG), revealed that the employee was present on U.S. Capitol grounds during the breach.
During an interview with the OIG, the employee admitted to being near the Capitol but provided false information, claiming not to have witnessed any violence or committed any illegal acts. However, video evidence showed that there was widespread unlawful behavior happening around the Capitol at the same time the employee was present.
The report stated that the employee entered restricted grounds without authorization and remained there for approximately two hours during the riot. Despite initially denying any wrongdoing, the employee later admitted to breaching a U.S. Capitol Police barricade and witnessing clashes between law enforcement and protesters.
While the employee was not named in the report, it was confirmed that they are no longer employed by the Treasury Department. The case was presented for prosecution, but the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia declined to pursue charges. The investigation was subsequently closed in July 2022.
Several government employees, including a former Marine and a National Security Agency worker, have been prosecuted for their involvement in the Capitol breach. As of April 6, 2024, over 1,300 individuals have been charged in connection to the events of January 6, with prosecutions ongoing.
