Following the conclusion of Academy Charter High School’s graduation ceremony at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in Hempstead, a father of a student and a graduating senior were attacked by a group of masked suspects. The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. as families were leaving the building, resulting in the man being slashed on the leg and the student on the left ear when he attempted to intervene outside the campus. Both victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, and it remains unclear if they are related. Five individuals were arrested in connection with the attack, all of whom were wearing masks at the time.
According to Academy Charter, law enforcement informed them that the stabbing may be linked to a domestic dispute. The school reiterated that the incident occurred outside of the graduation venue and highlighted the security measures in place, including the use of magnetometers for all attendees. They also mentioned collaboration with Nassau County police and Hofstra University’s public safety officers to address the situation.
