The wildfire that led to a temporary evacuation order for Grand Forks, B.C., has now expanded to approximately four square kilometers in size.
The fire, which was initially discovered on Wednesday south of the U.S. border, grew from two square kilometers to its current size.
The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary had initially issued an evacuation order as the Goosmus wildfire moved towards Grand Forks, prompting “tactical evacuations.”
However, by 8 p.m., the district announced that the threat had decreased, and the evacuation order was lifted based on advice from the British Columbia Wildfire Service.
An update from the service confirmed that the fire had not crossed into Canada, but crews were still addressing a spot fire north of the border in collaboration with local fire departments.
Structural protection crews were deployed to the Grand Forks area, where over 150 properties were advised to remain prepared for potential evacuation if the fire threat resurfaces.
