An editor for The Great Translation Movement (TGTM) was detained at San Francisco International Airport on March 29 while applying for refugee status.
Originally from Hong Kong, Tam started as a volunteer for TGTM. Upon arriving at the airport from Hong Kong on a tourist visa, he sought asylum, which led to his denial of entry due to immigration intent. With no other visas, he was taken to a detention center by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Subsequently, he was transferred to the Golden State Annex, an immigration detention center in Los Angeles, with limited communication via phone calls. Tam is set to appear in court in June and is currently in search of legal representation and a bail guarantor to avoid potential imprisonment, torture, and other abuses if sent back to China.
Seeking assistance from the international community, Tam highlighted his involvement in TGTM, a movement that emerged during the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. The group of young Chinese netizens translated CCP propaganda into English and other languages, supporting Ukraine and advocating for freedom.
With over 40 volunteers arrested or missing, Tam shared his concerns about potential persecution in Hong Kong under the new national security law. Fearing arrest for anti-government activities, he decided to flee the region. Additionally, the movement faced criticism from CCP state media but continued its work despite limited resources.
Amidst challenges and uncertainties, Tam’s plight underscores the risks faced by those speaking out against authoritarian regimes, emphasizing the importance of international support and solidarity.
