ATHENS, Greece—Greek police apprehended a third suspect on Monday in connection with an explosion in central Athens last week that authorities have linked to an alleged aspiring domestic extremist group.
The 30-year-old woman turned herself in to Greek authorities at Athens International Airport after being located in Switzerland, officials stated.
The explosion on Oct. 31 destroyed a third-floor apartment in the central Ambelokipi neighborhood, resulting in the death of a 36-year-old man suspected of assembling an explosive device. A 33-year-old woman was critically injured and remains hospitalized under police supervision. A 31-year-old male suspect surrendered to authorities.
Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis described the bomb as “monstrous” with concentrated explosive material, emphasizing its potential for great destruction due to its power. The apartment building has been deemed uninhabitable due to the blast’s impact.
Chrisochoidis noted that those allegedly involved appeared to be young individuals aspiring to become a new generation of domestic terrorists in Greece.
During searches at the blast site, three additional locations, and a seized vehicle, anti-terrorism units discovered two handguns with magazines, digital devices, disguise materials such as wigs and rubber masks, and handwritten diagrams.
“I believe we are dealing with an attempt by some young individuals who are striving to establish a third generation of terrorism in Greece,” Chrisochoidis remarked.
The specific target and timing of the planned attack are still under investigation. All three suspects, including the deceased individual in the explosion, are Greek citizens.
