Harris is wrapping up her three-month campaign for president with a speech in Washington and rallies in swing states. The closing argument was made by Vice President Kamala Harris in a speech at the Ellipse in Washington on Oct. 29, emphasizing her stability as a candidate compared to former President Donald Trump. The rally drew thousands of attendees and was held at a symbolic location with views of the White House, where Trump spoke before the Capitol breach in January 2021.
Harris presented an optimistic vision for the future, pledging to move past the divisiveness of the Trump era and focus on strengthening the economy and protecting abortion rights. She emphasized the need for unity, distanced herself from Washington elites, and pledged to lead with optimism if elected.
The speech marked Harris’s final push to sway undecided voters in the closing days of the 2024 presidential election. After a brief campaign following Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Harris saw a rise in polling numbers post-Democratic National Convention in August. However, her momentum slowed in October, with Trump gaining a slight edge in swing state polls.
Supporters gathered at the rally in support of Harris, citing reasons such as historical significance, women’s rights, and the potential for a black female president. The event featured speakers sharing their enthusiasm for Harris’s candidacy and the possibility of making history with her election.
I am incredibly proud of my fellow Bison, and I am committed to ensuring that we uphold democracy,” said George Washington University freshman Brady Eagan.
Eagan believes that now is the time for the younger generation to take charge.
He expressed concern that another Trump administration could pose a threat to democracy.
“It is our responsibility as young voters to show that we are present and prepared to bring about change,” Eagan stated.
The importance of “protecting democracy” varies among supporters of different parties, with 37 percent of Harris supporters ranking it as a top issue, while Trump supporters prioritize the economy (61 percent) and immigration (21 percent).
Vice President Harris will be delivering her final campaign message in various states leading up to Election Day, including North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Nevada.
Meanwhile, Trump kicked off the week with a rally in Georgia and has upcoming campaign stops planned in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada, and Wisconsin once again.
