CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris visited North Carolina on Saturday to pledge ongoing federal support and honor the “heroes among us” in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. This marked her second trip to the disaster zone in just four days.
Following Republican Donald Trump’s visit to the state the day before, Harris began her visit by participating in a briefing with state and local officials. She expressed gratitude to those tirelessly working to assist in the recovery efforts and promised continued federal assistance.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper acknowledged the crucial role of FEMA in providing resources since the disaster struck, emphasizing the state’s appreciation for the support.
During her visit, Harris also engaged in packing toiletries into aid kits at a distribution center. She met with volunteers like Angelica Wind from Asheville, who despite facing challenges herself, continued to help others in need.
As part of the government’s response to the disaster, President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris have been actively involved in assessing the damage, providing aid, and offering support to affected communities across the Southeast.
In a letter to congressional leaders, Biden highlighted the need for continued funding to support ongoing recovery efforts and urged swift action to address funding shortfalls in critical programs.
With over 220 casualties, Hurricane Helene is considered one of the most devastating storms to hit the U.S. mainland since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Meanwhile, during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump criticized the federal government’s response to the storm, particularly in North Carolina, citing inadequate relief efforts.
