Kamala Harris’ campaign is strengthening its communications team by bringing on two experienced operatives from the White House for the final three-month sprint.
Ian Sams, the White House spokesperson for oversight and investigations, will be joining Harris’ campaign in a senior spokesperson role, according to sources familiar with the moves. Kristen Orthman, principal deputy White House communications director, is also moving to the campaign to serve as senior adviser for strategic planning.
Herbie Ziskend will take on Orthman’s role at the White House for the remaining months of President Joe Biden’s term, as confirmed by sources.
Sams, known for his assertive and punchy style, previously worked on Harris’ 2020 presidential campaign. He later worked at the Department of Health and Human Services on messaging related to the administration’s pandemic response before moving to the White House. Orthman brings experience from working for former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s 2020 campaign, and the Democratic National Committee.
These moves highlight the shift in focus and allocation of resources from the White House to the campaign since Harris became the presidential candidate. Sams and Orthman will be part of a strong communications team in Wilmington, working alongside Harris’ top press aides.
With the recent departure of senior adviser Anita Dunn, White House communications director Ben LaBolt and Ziskend, who both have experience working for Barack Obama, are expected to lead the communications team in the West Wing until the end of Biden’s term.
