Vice President Kamala Harris has officially secured the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential election, receiving support from enough delegates to clinch the nomination. This comes after President Joe Biden stepped aside to support new party leadership in 2025.
Key Democrats, including President Biden, have endorsed Harris as the preferred candidate to challenge former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, in the upcoming election. Harris obtained support from various state delegations, surpassing the majority of delegates required to win on the first ballot.
Despite this early support, the official nomination will not take place until the Democratic National Convention in August, leaving room for potential challengers to emerge. As of now, no other candidate has been named by a delegate.
New Campaign in Full Swing
Following President Biden’s withdrawal, Vice President Harris swiftly secured endorsements from party leaders, gained the support of pledged delegates won during state primaries, and assembled a campaign team to face the Trump–Vance ticket. She accepted President Biden’s endorsement in Wilmington, Delaware, emphasizing her goal of strengthening the middle class.
Harris pledged to prioritize passing key legislation, including the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and measures related to abortion and gun control. She expressed her commitment to building a nation where all individuals have access to affordable healthcare, fair wages, and a secure retirement.
President Biden called into a meeting to urge his former campaign staff to unite behind Harris, emphasizing continuity in their mission despite the change in leadership. Several prominent Democrats, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, and various governors, have expressed their support for Harris.
The AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in the US, also endorsed Harris, citing her dedication to working people and her strong leadership qualities. This endorsement is crucial for securing votes in key battleground states.
As Harris’s campaign gains momentum, she has set a new record for presidential candidate donations within 24 hours, indicating strong support for her candidacy. With the convention approaching, Harris remains a frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in the 2024 presidential race.
