U.S. Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) has been trying to access bodycam footage of the September 2022 assault on Ronald Colton McAbee since January 2023. The GOP-led House Committee on the Judiciary launched an investigation on May 20 into the incident after Rep. Nehls faced obstacles from the District of Columbia Department of Corrections and the U.S. Marshals Service in obtaining the footage. Judiciary Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) sent a letter to DOC Director Thomas Faust demanding the footage and related documents within a week, threatening a congressional subpoena if not provided. Mr. Jordan expressed concerns about the lack of transparency and obstruction by the DOC regarding the incident involving Mr. McAbee. The letter also requested records related to disciplinary actions against Lt. Crystal Lancaster and the investigation of the incident. Rep. Nehls has been persistent in his efforts to uncover the truth behind the incident and ensure humane treatment for all detainees. Despite facing denials to his requests, he remains dedicated to pursuing the release of the bodycam video to shed light on the events that transpired. McAbee was labeled as a terrorist while the decision on pretrial detention was still pending before him. However, the judge overseeing the case was later removed from it.
