I used to have a skeptical view of patriotism. Growing up in the sixties, it was trendy to be an internationalist. However, over time, my perspective changed, and I became deeply patriotic. As I delved into readings like “The Federalist Papers” and observed the world around me, my appreciation for patriotism grew. Despite some frustrations with my country, I am now as patriotic as they come.
One moment that solidified my patriotism was during a trip to the Soviet Union in the 1980s. When asked about my feelings towards President Reagan compared to General Secretary Gorbachev, I defended the democratic process and supported my country’s leader. This experience reinforced my belief in the values of democracy and patriotism.
Today, as we face challenges and divisions in our country, it can be easy to become cynical about patriotism. However, it is crucial to maintain a sense of optimism and humor while actively defending our constitutional republic. We must resist propaganda and work towards unity and progress.
