Success in school is achievable for any teenager who maintains a positive attitude towards the educational journey. Developing solid study habits and a strong work ethic are key components that can begin to take shape as early as elementary school. Despite facing challenges such as limited resources and frequent relocations during my upbringing, I embraced the opportunity for growth and learning.
My Journey
During my junior high and high school years, I balanced academics with part-time jobs like helping neighbors with chores, mowing lawns, and working in various roles. While I occasionally goofed off, I remained focused on my studies, completing homework, and preparing for tests. My parents instilled the values of diligence and responsibility, guiding me through the college selection process.
Upon entering college, I worked in maintenance to cover expenses and took out a loan, fully aware that I would be solely responsible for repayment post-graduation. Summers were spent working in farming and mining, alongside pursuing a degree. After college, I enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, a decision divergent from the norm.
My Coast Guard experience honed my discipline and work ethic, leading me to further educational pursuits. Despite the challenges, I persisted, working part-time to sustain myself while completing my credentials and Master’s degree in education at CSU, Fullerton.
Tips for Success
For any teenager aiming to excel in school, fostering a positive mindset towards learning is paramount. Establishing a routine, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and prioritizing academics over distractions are crucial. Seeking part-time employment, pursuing challenging courses, and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to learn are additional steps towards success.
