Sheinbaum to consider the economic impact of decreased remittances from the United States. The Wall Street Journal reported that remittances from Mexicans living abroad, mostly in the United States, hit $4.5 billion in April, up 23% from a year ago.
How Will Mexico’s President-Elect Claudia Sheinbaum Affect California?
It is imperative to address the potential economic impact of Ms. Scheinbaum’s policies on the Mexican economy and the influx of immigrants at the border. If her economic strategies lead to damage in Mexico, the crisis could escalate due to the high number of immigrants waiting at the border.
Impact on California
According to a report by The Epoch Times in January, the implementation of free health care for illegal immigrants in California could cost taxpayers billions annually. Recent estimates suggest that this newly enacted state law could result in a financial burden ranging from $3 billion to $6 billion per year.
In March 2023, a study by the Federation for American Immigration Reform revealed that illegal immigration was costing U.S. taxpayers $150.7 billion. California taxpayers alone bore a cost of $30.9 billion.
If Ms. Scheinbaum’s policies lead to an increase in illegal immigration to California, these costs are likely to rise. Conversely, if former President Trump fulfills his promises to curb illegal immigration and deport those already present, the financial burden is expected to decrease.
Just like in Mexico, elections in the United States have significant consequences.
