Hunter Biden’s tax trial in Los Angeles has been postponed to September 5, allowing his legal team to prepare for a separate firearms trial in Delaware. This delay eases the pressure on President Biden’s son but brings the trial closer to the campaign season, potentially impacting the election.
In contrast, former President Donald J. Trump’s federal trials have been postponed and may not start before the election. Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, argued that defending him in two different venues with different legal issues made the original June 20 start date unfeasible.
Special counsel David C. Weiss opposed the delay, stating that both cases could be tried swiftly. However, Judge Mark C. Scarsi, a Trump appointee, sided with Hunter Biden’s team but expressed reluctance towards further delays.
Hunter Biden’s lawyer has been actively challenging elements of both cases, alleging a Republican witch hunt and seeking to dismiss the charges. The tax indictment against him detailed his history of drug abuse and tax evasion.
Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to tax evasion charges related to income from foreign businesses, following the collapse of a plea deal six months prior. The trial is set to proceed in September amid ongoing legal challenges.
