Authorities have confirmed the identity of the human remains found inside a suitcase discarded in Long Island as 31-year-old Seikeya Jones.
The decaying remains of Jones were found in a suitcase next to an apartment complex in Huntington Station after residents reported a strong odor, as stated by the Suffolk County Police Department in a press release on Thursday.
An autopsy by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death, as the circumstances surrounding Jones’ death and how her body ended up in that location remain unknown.
Jones was reported missing on Aug. 16 and was last seen near Fifth Avenue in Huntington Station, according to the police.
Law enforcement found the suitcase in a wooded area off Nassau Road while responding to a report of suspicious activity.
The suitcase was located deep in the woods near the apartment complex.
Authorities are still investigating how long the suitcase had been there and how long ago Jones had passed away.
The disturbing discovery shocked residents of the New York City suburb as they witnessed a heavy police presence in the neighborhood on Tuesday.
“You would never think that something like that would happen in your building or around your building,” neighbor Flavio Ribadeneyra told News12 Long Island.
