During a campaign rally in Las Vegas, former President Donald J. Trump focused on appealing to working-class voters by promising to eliminate taxes on tips for hospitality workers. Despite technical difficulties with his teleprompter, Mr. Trump continued with his usual rhetoric, touching on familiar topics such as immigration, the 2020 election fraud claims, and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
His speech, which lasted about an hour, lacked focus and delved into various issues, including his recent felony conviction, immigration policies, and attacks on President Biden. He also praised his supporters who stormed the Capitol, calling them “J6 warriors” and suggesting they were victims of a rigged election.
Mr. Trump’s campaign announced its Latino outreach effort, known as Latino Americans for Trump, during the rally. The event aimed to capitalize on dissatisfaction among working-class and Latino voters in Nevada, with a focus on economic concerns. Mr. Trump’s proposal to eliminate taxes on tips for restaurant and hospitality workers was seen as a direct appeal to this demographic.
Following the rally, the Culinary Workers Union criticized Mr. Trump’s proposal as empty campaign promises. Despite his efforts to connect with voters, the union questioned the sincerity of his promises. The rally in Nevada marked the end of Mr. Trump’s Western swing, which included multiple events in key battleground states.
The campaign raised approximately $27.5 million across various fund-raisers, according to Chris LaCivita, one of Mr. Trump’s campaign managers. The success of these events will be confirmed once campaign filings are made public in the coming months.
