Yu Shang Food has issued a recall for 70,000 pounds of meat and poultry products due to listeria concerns. Tragically, an infant has passed away from a listeria infection linked to Yu-Shang Food’s ready-to-eat meat and poultry items, as reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC has identified eleven cases of Listeria infection across four states, resulting in nine hospitalizations and one fatality in California. Interviews and lab results have confirmed that Yu-Shang Food products are the source of the illnesses.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall of approximately 72,240 pounds of Yu Shang Food’s ready-to-eat products nationwide. This recall follows an earlier withdrawal of 4,589 pounds of products by the company. The affected items bear the establishment number ‘P-46684’ or ‘EST. M46684’ and were distributed to various retail outlets and online platforms.
Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for recalled items such as pork hock, chicken feet, pork feet, duck neck, beef shank, and pork tongue. The risk of listeria contamination was discovered during routine FSIS testing in October.
Listeriosis can lead to serious infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues. Customers who have consumed the recalled products and are experiencing flu-like symptoms should seek medical attention.
Authorities are investigating whether the strain of bacteria in this recall is connected to a broader listeria outbreak. Listeriosis is a significant cause of foodborne illness-related deaths in the U.S., with an estimated 260 fatalities annually. The case-fatality rate for listeriosis is around 20%, rising to 25% among pregnant women.
Legislators have proposed the Federal Food Administration Act to establish a unified federal agency dedicated to food safety. This new agency would assume oversight from the FDA, aiming to prevent food contamination and related health risks.
