The Greens MPs have cited the failed Voice referendum in Australia as the reason behind their latest move. The Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs has commenced an inquiry into the Truth and Justice Commission Bill 2024, which was introduced in the Senate by Greens’ Yamatji-Noongar Senator Dorinda Cox. This bill was proposed in response to the unsuccessful Voice to Parliament referendum, with the aim of establishing a Federal Truth and Justice Commission to facilitate “truth-telling” about the impacts of colonization, dispossession, and systemic racism on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The commission would also focus on advancing justice, healing, raising awareness, and promoting reconciliation for First Nations communities and the broader Australian society. The committee, led by Chair Mutthi Mutthi and Wamba Wamba Senator Jana Stewart, has invited stakeholders and experts to provide input on the bill’s provisions. Interested individuals and organizations can submit their opinions on the bill by Sept. 6.
Greens’ First Nations spokeswoman, Ms. Cox, emphasized the importance of the healing process for Australia’s Indigenous people through truth-telling. The bill aims to address historical injustices, ongoing issues, and increase awareness of Indigenous history. Greens leader Adam Bandt highlighted the necessity of telling the truth as a crucial step towards healing and national unity, especially in light of the rejection of an Indigenous voice by Australian voters.
