The U.S. media has a history of accusing ideological adversaries of using civilians as human shields. In 1967, the Associated Press reportedly described the Viet Cong as using children as human shields. President George W. Bush highlighted Saddam Hussein’s use of civilians as human shields to justify the Iraq War.
Today, as Israel’s leaders and military treat the entire Gaza Strip and its residents as human shields, including hospitals, schools, and refugee camps, the true meaning of the term “human shield” under international law is distorted.
For Palestinians, being labeled as human shields goes beyond just being on the front lines for Israel; it devalues our lives and reduces us to mere tools of war.
While CNN did not condemn Israel’s use of civilians as human shields when Mossad’s civilian-dense location was mentioned, the Western media often portrays Israelis as fully human compared to Palestinians.
