Italian police detained Sister Anna Donelli, a nun recognized for her work in prisons, along with 24 other individuals in connection with an investigation into the ‘Ndrangheta Mafia in the city of Brescia, as confirmed by sources familiar with the situation.
Sister Anna Donelli, aged 57, who has been actively volunteering at Milan’s San Vittore prison, is under suspicion for alleged Mafia collaboration and facilitating communication between the criminal organization and its incarcerated members. She is also known for her dedication to serving the impoverished areas of Milan.
The nun was honored with the “Golden Panettone” award in February, a prestigious civic recognition in Milan.
Local authorities revealed that two politicians were also taken into custody during the operation, which resulted in the seizure of $1.89 million. The suspects are facing charges ranging from Mafia association to drug trafficking and money laundering.
The ‘Ndrangheta, originating from Calabria in southern Italy, has emerged as one of the most influential Mafia groups in the country, expanding its reach into various criminal activities including white-collar crimes.
