Italian authorities have initiated a manslaughter investigation regarding the tragic sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals. Ambrogio Cartosio, a government prosecutor in Termini Imerese, announced on August 24 that his office has launched an investigation into potential manslaughter charges related to the incident. The bodies of a British tech tycoon, a Morgan Stanley executive, and five others, including a teenager, have been recovered following the yacht’s capsizing in a storm on August 19.
The investigation aims to uncover how a supposedly unsinkable vessel, built by Perini Navi and owned by The Italian Sea Group, could sink within 15 minutes near the shore. Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, claimed that the yacht’s structure and keel made it “unsinkable,” raising questions about the circumstances leading to the tragic event.
According to Costantino, an “endless chain of errors” contributed to the sinking of the Bayesian, prompting a closer examination of all potential causes by investigators. The incident, described as an unbelievable technical and factual story, has shocked many, including notable passengers like Mike Lynch and his family, who were on board during the fateful voyage.
The yacht was struck by a severe storm, potentially involving a waterspout, near Palermo, Sicily, leading to its rapid capsizing and sinking. With 22 individuals on board, including Lynch, his wife, and daughter, the tragic event claimed multiple lives, leaving some survivors trapped inside as the vessel went down.
Experts have speculated that the yacht may have taken on water through broken portholes or an open hatch, contributing to its rapid descent. Built in 2008 and refurbished twice, the Bayesian’s sinking has raised significant concerns about its safety and maintenance practices.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are committed to uncovering the truth behind this devastating incident, offering closure to the families of the victims and shedding light on the events leading to the yacht’s untimely demise.
