Republican Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), expressed his support for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) to take the top Democrat spot on the panel, despite their policy differences. Comer praised AOC, calling her a good person and well-spoken during an interview with CNN on Thursday.
Comer mentioned his rocky relationship with Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md), the previous top Democrat on the committee, who left his post to lead the House Judiciary Committee. Comer stated, “I don’t think that’s any secret. I tell the press when they ask about the race for ranking member, the Democrats have nowhere to go but up after having [Rep. Jamie Raskin] for the last four years. So I think AOC would be great.”
Ocasio-Cortez announced her candidacy for the position in a letter to colleagues, emphasizing the importance of the role in holding administrations accountable and addressing economic challenges facing Americans.
The House Oversight Committee plays a crucial role in overseeing the federal government and ensuring checks and balances in Washington D.C. Ocasio-Cortez’s potential leadership on the committee reflects a trend of younger House Democrats vying for major positions in the wake of the 2024 election.
Democrats are set to elect their committee leaders in closed-door sessions next week, with potential shakeups expected on other House committees as well.
