Argentine President Javier Milei and Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently met for the first time at Tesla’s headquarters in Austin, Texas. Despite their prior communication on Musk’s X platform (formerly Twitter), the in-person meeting marked a significant step in their growing relationship.
During their meeting, the pair discussed the importance of free markets and the elimination of bureaucratic barriers to attract investors, as stated by the Argentine government. Milei shared his visit to Tesla’s factory on X, emphasizing the value of freedom, while Musk reciprocated by posting a photo of them together, expressing excitement for the future.
Gerardo Werthein, Argentina’s future ambassador to the U.S., described the encounter as “love at first sight” and highlighted discussions on investment opportunities for Tesla in lithium, a key material for electric vehicle batteries.
Milei and Musk agreed to organize a large event in Argentina to promote freedom, with Musk as a keynote speaker. Musk had been a vocal supporter of Milei’s deregulation promises during his presidential campaign, and their continued collaboration aims to advance shared ideals.
Before meeting Musk, Milei visited Miami, where he was honored for his support of Israel and engaged in discussions with key figures in economic development. The frequent trips of Milei to the U.S. have sparked criticism from his opposition, who view them as distractions from domestic priorities.
Back in Argentina, Milei faces challenges as his party, La Libertad Avanza, recently experienced a split in Congress, resulting in a reduction of support and internal fractures. Despite these challenges, Milei remains committed to his vision for the country’s economic and political future.
