The Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein, funded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ charity, is establishing a multi-million dollar research facility at North Carolina State University. The facility will focus on researching lab-grown and plant-based meats, as well as ‘precision fermentation’ to produce proteins for food formulations. The center aims to be a biomanufacturing hub for environmentally friendly, healthy, tasty, and affordable dietary proteins. The Bezos Earth Fund, a $10 billion commitment from Bezos to address climate and nature, awarded the university $30 million for this initiative. The center will research sustainable proteins, including plant-based products, cultivated meats, and precision fermentation. The goal is to create new technologies in the field and understand consumer preferences for proteins. The Bezos Earth Fund has committed $100 million to establish a network of research centers focusing on sustainable protein alternatives. The center in North Carolina will also encourage biomanufacturing firms to relocate to the state.
