A 2-year-old Florida girl named Melody Alana Rose Duran tragically lost her life after her father allegedly slashed her throat during a court-approved visit last week. Family members and paramedics made desperate attempts to save her.
The incident occurred when Jeronimo Duran, 33, picked up Melody from her mother’s house and took her to his grandmother’s home. Upon the grandmother’s return, she discovered a horrifying scene in the kitchen where Duran was lying on top of the girl, who appeared discolored and unresponsive.
911 was called, and Melody was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Duran’s stepfather attempted CPR on the child while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
Duran, who was arrested for the crime, confessed to choking his daughter unconscious and slashing her throat with a knife. He mentioned his struggles with mental health and substance abuse during the investigation.
The tragic incident unfolded amidst a custody battle between Duran and Melody’s mother, Mona Rosita Clarke, who had filed for full custody citing Duran’s mental health issues and violent tendencies. The court had granted Duran unsupervised visits with Melody, leading to the fatal outcome.
The community has been shocked by the events, with first responders receiving counseling for their efforts to save the young girl’s life. Duran remains in custody facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
The heartbreaking story serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues and ensuring the safety of children in custody disputes.
