Former President Donald Trump’s legal team successfully requested a temporary pause in his classified documents trial to address the implications of the Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. Judge Aileen Cannon granted a stay on three pending deadlines to allow Trump’s attorneys and special counsel Jack Smith’s team more time to submit additional briefs on how the immunity decision should impact the case.
The deadlines that have been paused include expert disclosures, reciprocal discovery, and the special counsel’s CIPA submission. The special counsel must respond to Trump’s motion by July 18, with any reply due by July 21. Judge Cannon will decide on the additional briefing request after receiving these responses, while all other deadlines remain unchanged.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling that former President Trump has immunity from certain charges related to official acts during his presidency, his legal team filed a request to halt most proceedings in the case until his immunity defense is resolved. The attorneys argue that addressing these threshold questions is crucial to protect the institution of the Presidency.
In response, the special counsel’s office contends that Trump retained sensitive materials unlawfully after leaving office and obstructed efforts to recover them. Despite claiming immunity, Trump has pleaded not guilty in the case.
Trump’s attorneys also argue that the recent Supreme Court decision weakens the special counsel’s challenge to his immunity. They believe that pausing the deadlines will prevent further misuse of judicial resources and ensure a fair resolution of the case.
