Pop singer Justin Timberlake’s attorney stated on Friday that his client was not intoxicated during a traffic stop in June when he was arrested for running a stop sign and swerving from his lane in New York’s Hamptons. The lawyer is pushing to have the DWI charge dismissed, citing errors in the police documents.
Following a hearing, Sag Harbor Village Justice Carl Irace ordered Timberlake to be re-arraigned on Aug. 2 with corrected paperwork. The judge agreed to allow Timberlake to appear virtually for the proceeding as he is currently on a tour promoting his album “Everything I Thought It Was” in Europe.
Timberlake’s lawyer, Edward Burke, emphasized that significant errors were made in the documents and expects the charge to be dropped, asserting that Timberlake was not driving under the influence.
Prosecutors from Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney’s office acknowledged a clerical error on the paperwork, describing it as “ministerial.” An amended charging document was filed on July 2.
Despite other issues with the arrest documents, Burke did not elaborate on the specifics, noting that mistakes were made by the police. He emphasized Timberlake’s respect for law enforcement and the legal process, highlighting his cooperation and respectful demeanor during the arrest.
Timberlake was arrested in the early hours of June 18 after allegedly running a stop sign and swerving from his lane while driving a 2025 BMW. Court papers indicated signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes, a strong smell of alcohol, and poor performance on sobriety tests.
During the arrest, Timberlake mentioned having one martini and following friends home. He later declined a breath test at the East Hampton police station.
The Grammy-winning artist, known for his early career as a Disney Mouseketeer and as a member of NSYNC, has transitioned into a successful solo recording career since the early 2000s.
