Alpha Kappa Alpha Creates Political Action Committee
Alpha Kappa Alpha, the historically Black sorority that Vice President Kamala Harris is a notable alumna of, has established a political action committee. This move is significant as it shows the sorority’s support for potentially sending one of their own to the White House.
AKA is part of the “Divine Nine,” a collective of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious sororities and fraternities. With a network of over 2 million alumni, this group holds considerable political influence, which both political parties are eager to engage ahead of the upcoming election.
When Harris was announced as Joe Biden’s running mate in 2020, their campaign received an influx of donations in the amount of $19.08, referencing the year of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s founding. Since then, Harris has hosted Divine Nine leaders at the White House, marking a historic moment as they met with a president or vice president for the first time.
Following Biden’s endorsement of Harris after exiting the race, all Divine Nine presidents pledged to lead a voter registration and mobilization campaign. The newly formed Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority PAC, Inc., also known as AKA 1908 PAC, will accept donations to support federal campaigns and political parties, with Kiahna Davis serving as the PAC’s treasurer.
Harris has always held a special connection to AKA and the Divine Nine organizations, describing them as “family.” She has actively engaged with these groups at various events and rallies, highlighting the importance of their role in shaping political discourse.
Other Greek organizations, such as Phi Beta Sigma and the Fraternity & Sorority Political Action Committee, also have fundraising operations to support candidates who align with their values and goals.
