Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota has sparked controversy once again, this time by criticizing President Biden’s German shepherd, Commander, for biting several Secret Service agents and suggesting that the dog should have been euthanized. Noem, a Republican, made these comments during an appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
Commander was removed from the White House last fall after multiple biting incidents that required medical attention for the injured agents. Noem’s remarks about Commander came as she promotes her upcoming memoir, “No Going Back,” where she shares a story about shooting her own family dog, Cricket, in the past.
In her book, Noem describes Cricket as untrainable and dangerous, leading her to make the difficult decision to euthanize the dog. She also references Commander in relation to her decision to put down Cricket, highlighting the dangers of owning a dog with aggressive behavior.
The White House has not yet responded to Noem’s comments about Commander. Despite facing backlash for her actions towards her own pets, Noem stands by her decision to protect people by euthanizing Cricket and a goat on the same day over 20 years ago.
In a somewhat controversial statement in her book, Noem imagines a scenario where she becomes president in 2025 and sends Commander to meet Cricket in the afterlife. This remark further emphasizes her stance on aggressive animals and the importance of ensuring public safety.
