Former Democratic Newark City Council President LaMonica McIver has been sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives to represent New Jersey’s 10th congressional district seat following a special election win on Sept. 18. McIver will serve out the remainder of Rep. Donald Payne Jr.’s term, which ends in January.
The late Rep. Donald Payne Jr. previously held the seat in the House of Representatives until his passing in April. McIver’s victory in the special election against Republican small businessman Carmen Bucco secured her position in Congress.
In a speech on the House floor after her swearing-in, McIver expressed her optimism for the future and her commitment to working together to advance the nation. She aims to “blaze new trails together” and fulfill the promise of the United States.
McIver’s journey to political office began in Newark, where she served as the city council president. Her introduction to politics at a young age by Mayor Raj Baraka inspired her to pursue a career in public service.
