The Bridge Fire has been raging in the San Gabriel Mountains for almost a month. Firefighters are working diligently on the nearly month-old Bridge Fire in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, which reached 99 percent containment on Saturday after scorching 54,878 acres.
The fire, which spread across both San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, has caused destruction to 81 structures and damaged 17 others, resulting in eight injuries.
According to the Angeles National Forest, smoke from a specific area of the fire near Pine Mountain, north of Mt. Baldy and south of Wrightwood, can be seen from both sides of the San Gabriel mountains. However, there is no threat to containment lines or mountain communities.
The fire started at 2:12 p.m. on September 8 near East Fork and Glendora Mountain roads and remained relatively small initially. However, it expanded dramatically on September 10 during an extended heatwave, destroying numerous structures as it moved into San Bernardino County. It is currently the largest active fire in the state.
Road closures are in place at various locations due to the fire, and as of Saturday, there were 78 personnel assigned to battle the flames. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Bridge Fire is one of three major wildfires burning in Southern California. The Airport Fire in Orange and Riverside counties has burned 23,526 acres and was 98 percent contained as of Saturday, while the Line Fire in San Bernardino County has burned 43,965 acres and was 79 percent contained.
