A group of five Republican lawmakers is urging the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to blacklist two prominent Chinese battery companies due to concerns about their supply chains being linked to state-sponsored slave labor and the Uyghur genocide by the communist regime.
Rep. John Moolenaar (R-Mich.), chairman of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), led the lawmakers in sending letters to Robert Silvers, DHS under secretary for strategy, policy, and plans, on June 5. They are requesting that the agency place CATL and Gotion High-Tech on an entity list created under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA).
“The American people expect companies in the U.S. to avoid all involvement with the Chinese Communist Party’s campaign of genocide,” Mr. Moolenaar emphasized.

According to the lawmakers, CATL also obtains electrolytic nickel from a subsidiary of China’s state-owned Xinjiang Nonferrous, which is known for using Uyghur forced labor.
The lawmakers stated that Xinjiang Nonferrous operates the largest copper mine deposits in Xinjiang and has forced Uyghurs to work in various capacities under the guise of ‘poverty alleviation’ and anti-extremism programs.
Gotion is also linked to Xinjiang Nonferrous, purchasing aluminum foil from one of its subsidiaries, which the lawmakers noted.
The press release mentioned, “Gotion sources material from Xinjiang Joinworld, a company involved in ‘poverty alleviation through labor transfer,’ which often conceals forced labor.” They added that Gotion sources materials from companies closely associated with XPCC.
The letters sent by the lawmakers identified other problematic companies connected to CATL and Gotion.
If DHS decides against adding CATL and Gotion High-Tech to the entity list, the lawmakers stated they would request a briefing with DHS officials.
In addition to Rep. Moolenaar, the other signatories of the letters are Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.), Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.), and Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Ill.).
The Epoch Times reached out to CATL and Gotion for comment but has not received a response as of press time.
