With the 79th United Nations General Assembly underway in New York, the global community faces unprecedented challenges to the international rules-based order. Ongoing conflicts, disinformation campaigns, and electoral interference threaten long-term peace, sustainability, and prosperity.
This year’s UNGA theme, “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations,” highlights the importance of inclusivity. Taiwan, facing exclusion from the international community by China, appeals to Canada and other allies to support its meaningful participation in the U.N. and its specialized agencies to maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait.
While Taiwan’s U.N. membership remains a challenge due to political realities, democratic nations engage with Taiwan on various fronts such as trade, technology, and humanitarian aid.
Taiwan’s significance lies in its role as the leading producer of semiconductor chips, essential for global technological advancements. Its democratic governance, strong civil society, and active NGOs contribute to global resilience and stability. There are no legal barriers to Taiwan’s U.N. involvement, and China’s misinterpretation of UNGA Resolution 2758 is the main obstacle to Taiwan’s inclusion.
Including Taiwan in U.N. initiatives aligns with Canada’s interests in economic empowerment and sustainable development. Taiwan’s contributions to global progress, particularly in technology and healthcare, demonstrate its potential to benefit the international community.
Advocating for Taiwan’s participation in the U.N. will enhance global collaboration and knowledge-sharing, benefiting communities worldwide. Let’s stand together to promote inclusivity and build a prosperous Indo-Pacific community!
