Information commissioner Caroline Maynard is expected to face questions from Members of Parliament today regarding her proposed reappointment.
The Liberal government has recently put forward Maynard’s name for another seven-year term.
Kevin Lamoureux, parliamentary secretary to the government House leader, has requested that the nomination be sent to the committee on access to information, privacy, and ethics.
Maynard, who serves as an ombudsman for users of the federal Access to Information Act, began her current seven-year term on March 1, 2018.
Under the act, individuals can request government records such as emails, memos, reports, and expense claims for a fee of $5.
In her most recent annual report, Maynard highlighted that after investigating over 30,000 complaints, she continues to witness the shortcomings of the act and the supporting system in meeting the needs of Canadians.
