Donald Trump made a surprising appearance at the Libertarian National Convention in Washington, D.C., where he faced a mix of Libertarian Party delegates and his own supporters.
An incident occurred when Starchild, a prominent Libertarian activist, was tackled by security for displaying an anti-Trump banner. Trump received boos when he suggested himself as the Libertarian Party nominee, but garnered cheers when he promised to commute the life sentence of Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the Silk Road.
Trump’s pledge to free Ulbricht, a request that the Libertarian Party had previously submitted to him, was met with approval from the audience.
Following Trump’s speech, three Libertarian presidential candidates delivered a response to the remaining crowd and media.
Reason captured the various reactions from the crowd, as well as opinions from Libertarian Party delegates and Trump supporters in attendance.
“It was the weirdest room I’ve ever been in,” commented one delegate to Reason.
