The privacy commissioner of Canada has announced that LinkedIn has paused the training of its artificial intelligence models using data from Canadian users.
Philippe Dufresne stated that his office was notified of this pause by LinkedIn, following concerns raised in media reports about the platform training AI models with data from Canadian users without prior notification.
Dufresne has requested information from LinkedIn regarding their training practices and how they obtain consent from their members.
While LinkedIn believed they were taking a privacy-protective approach to training their AI models, they will now ensure they are in compliance with privacy laws before resuming this practice.
Dufresne emphasized that even when personal information is publicly accessible, it must still be protected in accordance with privacy laws.
LinkedIn had previously suspended the use of U.K. user data for training AI models in response to similar concerns raised by the information commissioner in Britain.
