During his recent court appearance, a fan of Luigi Mangione managed to sneak a heart-shaped note to him hidden in a pair of argyle socks, as revealed by new court documents.
The note, which was found “secreted” in the cardboard packaging of the fresh socks, contained a message of support: “Know that there are thousands of people wishing you luck,” according to the filing.
Despite the gesture, Mangione, who is facing murder and terrorism charges, refused to wear the socks at the February hearing because he believed they didn’t look good, as stated in the court documents from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
Another hidden note was discovered, addressed to someone named “Joan,” as mentioned in the filing released on Wednesday.
The Manhattan DA’s Office refuted Mangione’s claims of unfair treatment, pointing out that he is actually receiving “special treatment” by being allowed to change out of his jail attire for court appearances.
Prosecutors expressed concern that future contraband concealed in Mangione’s clothing could pose a risk to court officers.
“Fortunately, the items smuggled were handwritten notes and not contraband capable of harming the transporting officers,” the filing stated.
Following his decision to go sockless with bare ankles, Mangione’s devoted fans were thrilled.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the charges of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in cold blood on a Midtown sidewalk.
