The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began Thursday morning in New York City despite steady rain, adding ponchos and umbrellas to the lineup of balloons, floats, and performances. The parade showcased new Spider-Man and Minnie Mouse balloons, zoo and pasta-themed floats, and performances from Jennifer Hudson, Idina Menzel, Kylie Minogue, and more.
While the parade has evolved over the years, it still includes marching bands, clowns, and concludes with Santa Claus ushering in the holiday season. This year’s lineup featured 17 giant character balloons, 22 floats, 15 inflatables, 11 marching bands, and various performers including the WNBA champion New York Liberty.
Notable highlights of the parade include a float featuring the Rao’s food brand, celebrating the Bronx Zoo’s 125th anniversary, and performances by Ariana Madix, T-Pain, Dan + Shay, and more. The parade route covers 2.5 miles from Manhattan’s Upper West Side to Macy’s Herald Square flagship store.
Despite the rain, organizers ensured the safety of the balloons by monitoring wind speeds. The parade, which has only been canceled three times in its history, continued as planned with temperatures in the upper 40s degrees F. The event was broadcast on NBC with hosts Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Al Roker, as well as a Spanish simulcast on Telemundo.
