A Tennessee man convicted of first-degree murder in the ambush killing of rapper Young Dolph has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Justin Johnson, the 26-year-old aspiring rapper, received an additional 35 years behind bars for his other convictions of conspiracy to commit murder and being a felon in possession of a gun.
The fatal shooting of Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Thornton Jr., took place in November 2021 at a Memphis bakery. Known for his charitable works in his hometown, the 36-year-old rapper was in Memphis to distribute Thanksgiving turkeys to families when the tragic event occurred.
Prosecutor Paul Hagerman described the killing as a “stone-cold execution” motivated by money and fame. Johnson, with three prior aggravated assault convictions, showed no hesitation in carrying out the murder-for-hire in a public place.
The rapper’s sister expressed the family’s feelings of “anger, anxiety, and grief” over the loss of Young Dolph, whose legacy will endure despite the tragedy.
In a surprising turn of events, co-defendant Cornelius Smith testified during the trial that a $100,000 hit was placed on Young Dolph by rapper Yo Gotti’s brother, Anthony “Big Jook” Mims. The motive behind the killing was related to a rivalry between Young Dolph’s record label, Paper Route Empire, and Yo Gotti’s label, Cocaine Muzik Group.
In addition to Smith’s testimony, prosecutors presented a substantial amount of circumstantial evidence, including surveillance footage and Johnson’s cellphone records. Smith, who faces murder and conspiracy charges, has pleaded not guilty, while another accomplice, Jermarcus Johnson, has admitted to serving as an accessory after the killing.
Despite the defense’s claims of insufficient evidence and manipulation by others, Johnson’s conviction stands, and he will not be eligible for parole for at least 50 years. The trial shed light on the complex web of events leading to Young Dolph’s tragic death and the ongoing legal proceedings involving the individuals responsible.
Young Dolph’s impact on the music industry and his community will be remembered, as his albums continue to resonate with fans and fellow artists alike.
