A man armed with a hatchet attacked three employees at a Chicago McDonald’s after the cashier refused to give him free food. The incident took place on Sunday morning, and the assailant casually walked away after grabbing a cookie.
According to Fox 32 Chicago, the attack occurred around 8:30 a.m. when the man entered the fast-food restaurant on South Western Avenue and demanded food from the cashier. When the cashier refused, the man grabbed a hatchet-like object and turned on the employees, sending three of them to the hospital.
A customer named Moe Cannon recounted to ABC 7 in Chicago that the suspect had asked him for coffee money just before the attack.
“I ended up giving him a dollar and I gave him a Newport,” Cannon said. “He had the axe on him. I didn’t know what he was going to do. Next thing I know, I see people running out of McDonald’s, hollering.”
After the attack, Cannon witnessed the man leaving the restaurant with the bloodstained hatchet and eating a cookie while smiling.
All three victims, identified as an 18-year-old man and two 45-year-old women, are employees of the restaurant. The man and one woman are in stable condition, while the other woman is in serious condition, as reported by Fox Business.
The suspect was later arrested by authorities at a CTA bus terminal across the street from the McDonald’s. The restaurant was closed after the incident, with only the drive-thru remaining open.
“Man, this messed up,” Cannon expressed. “They don’t mess with nobody. We go to this McDonald’s every day, and they all cool people there.”
